The home began operation in October of
1963 with a capacity for 21 residents. Request for admittance by our friends who were not members of
the church of Christ was
considered and approved in 1964. By the late 1970s, the
need for the services offered at Rest Haven had increased to the point that the
facility needed to
expand. A Certificate of Need was filed with and approved by the State of
Kansas
and construction on three additional wings was begun. The additional
space provided
increased capacity for resident rooms and additional space for the
kitchen, dining and living room areas. This expansion increased the resident capacity to 52
where it now remains.
The original concept for this home
was first proposed by George and Francis Blake
in the 1950s. The Blakes had been faithful members of the Winfield church
of Christ with George serving as an elder for many years. They envisioned a
facility to provide care for members of the church of Christ to be built on land that they
would contribute.
A fund raising campaign was started, soliciting free-will
contributions from individual
members of the church of Christ. No funds were solicited from Church
treasuries or from the public. The home began operation in October of 1963 with a
